It was a rare moment when an apprentice would purposefully start their day off early. Normally they would try to stay asleep as long as they could until their mentor would come and wake them from their dreams. But the small, ruddy apprentice was different. She found it extremely relaxing being away from the other apprentices. It was quieter and she didn't have to feel like she was being smothered by them all.
Baypaw placed herself close to the middle of the Riverclan camp. Not only did it give her the advantage of keeping track of every cat that was awake in the camp, but it also offered her the best view of the rising sun. It's fiery fingers had just about sprang up from their hiding place just beyond the horizon. It was almost like the setting sun's twin in beauty but held a more positive message. The rising sun brought forth the light that illuminates all corners of the land. It symbolized a time of good spirits. But the setting sun...it seems to kill the light bringing on hours of darkness.
It also reminded her of a cat's life cycle. When they are born, they are the rising sun bringing joy into this world. As their life progresses and draws to an end, the sun slowly makes its way across the sky. The day of the cat leaving the clans to join Starclan signifies the setting sun. She tilted her head to the side and pondered some more about this strange connection between the two cycles. Sometimes Baypaw amazed herself.
She focused once more at the sun, squinting as it gradually revealed more and more of its round body. The sun's orange light hit Baypaw's fur giving it a golden glow. She wasn't sure why, but she felt like she could do this all day. Just sit here and watch the sun make its way across the sky. It was rather hypnotizing but she had to look away. Baypaw turned her head to the side and closed her eyes shielding them from the sun's rays. She wanted to look back but she knew she couldn't or she would lose her sight. Baypaw stood up and turned to walk back towards the dens. Since she wasn't going to sacrifice her eyes to finish watching the sun rise, she might as well go find someone to talk to.
Halfway back to the dens, Baypaw stopped dead in her tracks. "That's right, most of them would still be asleep or just waking up and not be in the mood to talk to anyone. There's always the elders...though I'm sure they wouldn't want to be bothered by an apprentice this early in the morning," she said. She sighed and headed back over to where she was sitting and laid down. "Might as well wait for someone to wake up," she mumbled to herself while keeping watch.
ooc : this is open to any Riverclan cat.

Morning sunlight filtered in through the thickly-woven reeds that made up the warrior's den. The reeds were woven so thick that little light managed to seep through, but, being the newest warrior of RiverClan, Ottersplash had managed to snag one of the worst spots in the den--a place right beneath a small opening. It wasn't so big that rain was a large problem (not that the water-loving tom would have minded, anyway) but the little hole allowed for a single stream of light to strike him, and if he fell asleep the wrong way, Ottersplash found that light hiding his eyelids. Even a lazy bum like he couldn't sleep then, no matter how early it happened to be.
A loud yawn burst form his jaws and interrupted the quiet morning, and a few irritated mumbles arose from around him as Ottersplash rose slowly to his paws and stretched. Boy, was he sore! He had ventured to the moorlands with his buddy Hawkfang the previous day, and just that little bit of running had caused his limbs to tighten up. He felt as old as an elder as he slowly made his way out of the den and into the dim morning light. How did Hawkfang manage to run so well? It was a mystery.
The sound of gently running water serenaded his ears, and Ottersplash released a soft purr of pleasure. The water wasn't so cold as to be frozen yet, which meant leafbare wasn't too bad. There would be fish for awhile more. That was nice. But not really his point. He just cared about the ability to take a reckless swim in the icy water--when Hawkfang wasn't around to scold him, that is.
Ottersplash's creamy white belly rumbled, but as he glanced toward the dwindling freshkill pile, he made an uncharacteristically grown-up choice--he would not eat yet. He was getting too pudgy anyway, and he might as well go catch something first. And so he sat on his butt and curled his dark chocolate tail around his forepaws, glancing around the camp for anyone to go with him. Few cats were up this early, but he figured someone would be.
Finally, the shockingly unobservant warrior managed to catch sight of a small, reddish-brown cat sitting a few tail-lengths away. Upon closer inspection, he recognized Baypaw, one of the newer apprentices. From what he heard from other cats, Ottersplash knew Baypaw to be a shockingly observant, thoughtful, philosophical young cat, aspects which he greatly lacked. In all honesty, he hadn't really ever talked to her before, and this was as good a time as ever to get to know her. Besides, she seemed way too relaxed. She needed some fun in her life, and what was more fun than chasing after squirrels or jumping at leaves? Nothing, that's what.
"Hey, Baypaw!" he mewed cheerfully as he trotted briskly up to the apprentice. Great StarClan am I sore! he thought with a groan as his stiff limbs slowly began to relax. "Got any plans for the rest of the morning?" Heck, he didn't even know if she had a mentor, much less who that mentor might be.

It seemed like an eternity. Sure the sun had just risen above the horizon but when you have nobody to keep you company, second can seem like minutes, minutes like hours. But it wasn't a bad thing, or at least to Baypaw it wasn't. It gave her a chance to warm herself before she actually had to get up and do things for the clan. Plus, her darker colored coat made it easier for her to warm up unlike her lighter coated brethren.
'It's so comfortable,' she thought to herself. The suns' warmth enveloped her. Baypaw rolled over and stretched, allowing her muscles to constrict before relaxing. She felt as if she was slowly sinking into the cold ground. She let her eyes flutter open for a second to see if anyone had waken up yet. She sighed seeing the camp just as barren as it was when she woke up and closed her eyes. It was rather boring, just laying there. So what else could she do other than rest a bit more? Baypaw was only an apprentice and to wander off alone would be hazardous to her.
She let her mind fade into the dreamworld. At least this time, she wasn't cursed with the same repetitive dream she had been having for the past few days. This time she dreamt of being the next Riverclan Deputy. Of course that was a far off dream. She didn't get that far into the dream, though. Baypaw wasn't sure what had awoken her but what she did know was that it made her jump from her laying position.
Her fur was nearly standing on end when she came back to earth, landing heavily on her side. Still slightly confused about what had just happened, Baypaw looked around the camp. It seemed empty just like before but she still felt like she wasn't alone. Got any plans for the rest of the morning? The familiar voice came from behind her though she couldn't match it to any of the apprentices.
Turning around, she saw one of the warriors. The dark brown one with the white chest and stomach. 'What was his name again? Orchidspray? No, that doesn't sound right...Otter...Otter-something.' She stared dumbly at the tom for a few moments hopelessly trying to remember his name. Waking up then having to remember something right off the bat was not working out very well for Baypaw. But then again, she hasn't even talked to him before so it can't all be her fault for not remembering.
It was an awkward moment. Plenty of time had passed between his question and now. It was one of those moments that a cricket would begin its song but instead of a cricket, it was the splash of a fish. A few seconds passed before the name dawned on her. "Ottersplash!" she blurted out, probably a tad too loud at this time during the day, "That's your name right? Ottersplash? Anyways, I really don't have anything too important planned."

((Hahaha...Orchidspray! I like that ^.^))
She was a rather spacey young cat, he had to admit. As he watched she kind of drifted into sleep, and when he came up to talk to her, she jumped right into the air and fluffed up her fur as if she wanted to attack him. This sparked Ottersplash's playful instincts, and he had to physically keep himself from dropping down to his forepaws and taunting for her to attack him. He cared nothing for real fighting, but play-fighting? One of his favorite past-times. Behind swimming and chasing butterflies, of course.
No, he didn't think this serious-looking apprentice would really appreciate that. Besides, it'd be a little creepy, having a near-stranger just kind of pounce on you. Even Ottersplash knew that.
She kind of stared at him for a bit, and Ottersplash titled his head to one side as he let the silence stretch out. Not that he was uncomfortable, of course. He wasn't near observant enough to realize if some situation was awkward or not. He just kind of sat there, sort of enjoying the silence that came with the early morning.
"Ottersplash!"
|
He visibly jumped as she all but yowled his name, as if she had been trying to remember it, or something. His thoughts were confirmed when she went on. At last, the answer to his question--no, she had no plans. So apparently she wasn't planning on being trained today. Great! "Well, you wanna catch some squirrels?" he asked, as if no awkward moment had happened at all. For him, there had been nothing strange or awkward at all. "After we snag a few, we could just...you know...chase the rest." Surely this suggestion wouldn't strike her as odd, but Ottersplash didn't really know. His apprentice, Ashpaw, had seemed rather confused by the thought of "chasing squirrels" and not actually trying to catch them. Apprentices these days! Don't know how to have a good time! he thought with an amused lash of his tail. He had, after all, only been a warrior for a few short moons. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

((Haha, I was trying to think of a name that was similar to Ottersplash but way off at the same time xD Possible future character?))
It was obvious that she had startled him with her random outburst. Hopefully she hadn't woken up the rest of the clan. At the mention of squirrels, Baypaw titled her head. She hasn't ever been taught to hunt a squirrel let alone thinking about hunting one. She considered them a more advanced prey and she hasn’t even hunted a fish yet. Come to think of it, she hasn’t really got the chance to hunt much. Baypaw normally went out with whatever patrol was heading out at the time.
But she also had to think about the fun of trying to nab one of those twitchy little creatures. Maybe if she could kill one, she may have a chance of becoming a warrior quicker! Baypaw’s eyes lit up as soon as that thought was processed through her mind. “Sure!” she said enthusiastically, “I’d love to go squirrel hunting!” Now that she was warmed up, Baypaw wouldn’t have any trouble with chasing them down. However, she would have to be taught how she was supposed to catch one.
“Um…” she started. She didn’t want to sound too dumb in front of Ottersplash. Any other time Baypaw would speak freely without second thoughts but this was different mainly because she had just met him and didn’t want him to think of her as a cat incapable of becoming a great asset to her clan. ”So, Ottersplash, what method of hunting do you use to hunt a squirrel with?” In her mind it sounded like something a leader or elder would say, hopefully the brown tom would think so too.
‘I wonder why he has so much free time today. Doesn’t he have an apprentice to train? Maybe that apprentice isn’t awake yet. But he should at least bring them along with us so we could learn together. But what if he doesn’t have an apprentice. Would he want one? What if he was my mentor.? No, if he wanted to he would of introduced himself to me before now.’ Baypaw had let her thoughts wonder again. It was a bad habit of hers. Though not a major one, it still caused her to fade in and out of reality. She shook her head and focused back on Ottersplash. ’At least this doesn’t happen during hunts…

Oh bah, she was such a contemplative little she-cat. He'd have to fix that today. Ottersplash's tail curled in anticipation. Would Baypaw like chasing squirrels? It didn't even occur to him that she didn't know how to hunt one. He just assumed she had a mentor, and that mentor had already taught her how to hunt one, just like he'd already taught Ashpaw to hunt fish and squirrels. It never occurred to him that maybe she would need instruction. He didn't even think about snagging Ashpaw from the apprentice den and taking him out, too. Ottersplash wasn't all that thoughtful when it came to such things. He just wanted to have fun.
”So, Ottersplash, what method of hunting do you use to hunt a squirrel with?”
|
The only thing he found strange about that statement was that an apprentice was saying it. She sounded like Ottersplash's old mentor, for StarClan's sake! We'll fix it, he thought cheerfully, flicking Baypaw with the tip of his chocolate tail. "Well come on, and I'll show you," he mewed, springing to his paws and trotting briskly out of camp. He was heading for the River--there were trees and squirrels aplenty there, and they could also go for a swim if Baypaw was up to it...Swimming! He hadn't swum in quite awhile...not since that time he'd jumped right into the river with Ashpaw and ended up shivering his tail off. Maybe the river was warmer now....He knew that wasn't true, but Ottersplash was pretty good at fooling himself, and he was rather stubborn for such a scatterbrained warrior. Ottersplash was the complete opposite of what Baypaw thought a warrior should be. He almost reminded her of an apprentice. “Okay,” she replied a bit too enthusiastically. She may not look like it, but Baypaw was ecstatic about hunting the squirrels. She would of ran ahead of the tom but she wouldn’t want to frighten any of the prey so soon in their hunt. She looked around them as they headed off towards the river and was ready to alert Ottersplash if a squirrel was in their immediate vicinity.
She hadn’t noticed before, probably due to being surrounded by the warm bodies of the apprentices and the sun, but the wind had a slight sharpness to it. Even though it barely penetrated her thick fur Baypaw could feel its icy claws piercing her flesh. She shivered and she thought of the squirrels. She wondered how they withstood the leaf-bare. Maybe they leave like many of the large, noisy birds that frequent the river during new leaf. Either way, if they were smart they would be in a warmer place. Which brought the question to her mind. Would the squirrels even be out today? Baypaw hesitated before asking Ottersplash wondering if she was asking too many questions. “Do you think that squirrels are going to be out today? It would be a waste to travel all this way and not even get to hunt one…” She let her sentence trail off. Maybe she was asking too many questions. Perhaps they could practice hunting fish if their predetermined prey was unavailable.
By now they were close enough to the river that the sound of its gentle waters could be heard clearly. Baypaw pictured all of the fish in the river just sitting there in the frigid water as if they are begging to be caught. That was another prey she was eager to practice hunting. “I know we’re here for squirrels, but do you think we could catch some fish too?” She kept her voice hushed nearly inaudible against the sounds of the river.

She caught up with him, then scouted slightly ahead. Boy if she wasn't already shaping out to be a smart young cat that used her head. Ottersplash was only slightly envious of her focus, though--he couldn't ever focus long enough to worry about focus.
"It would be a waste to travel all this way and not even get to hunt one…”
He stopped listening after "waste". In fact, he stopped walking altogether, and the dark chocolate warrior turned slowly to face the reddish-brown apprentice. Pale yellow eyes were slightly narrowed, not in anger, but in confusion. He tilted his head to one side, chocolate ears perking forward as he studied Baypaw.
"That's a strange attitude," he mewed slowly, feeling just a bit grown up and warrior-like for the first time in awhile. There were a few rare moments in which Ottersplash actually sounded like a warrior. "Because, in my opinion, getting out and about in the territory rather than staying in camp is never a waste, whether we bring home squirrels or not."
The attitude left as quickly as it had come, and Ottersplash shrugged his shoulders and trotted over to the edge of the river. Peering into the depths, he saw several fish dart by within jsut a few seconds, and a slight purr rumbled from his throat. Good old, reliable river. What kind of cat would want to live anywhere but here?
Baypaw asked another question, about the river this time, and Ottersplash's ears perked up. Well, that was better! She liked water! Of course, what RiverClan cat didn't like water? "Yeah, we can fish some," he mewed cheerfully. "But we might as well go after squirrels first, since our splashing about in the water might frighten any off." He didn't wait for her reaction, but began to sniff the air. "First step, let's actually catch some," he suggested, realizing they needed to take at least some prey back to camp. He waited for Baypaw to make a movement, once again assuming she already knew how to hunt squirrels.

When he stopped dead in his tracks, Baypaw thought that he had spotted a squirrel and started to crouch down. “That’s a strange attitude,” That statement struck her as odd and she stood back up to look at Ottersplash. "Because, in my opinion, getting out and about in the territory rather than staying in camp is never a waste, whether we bring home squirrels or not." ‘Oh now I remember what he means,’ she thought to herself. She nearly forgotten about what she had said before about this being a waste if no squirrels were caught. “I guess you’re right,” she said. He was right in a way though staying in camp would give them an opportunity to see if the elders or queens need anything. But at least he was sounding like a warrior now.
Baypaw watched as he went to the side of the river. She hoped he didn’t want to go ahead and catch the fish now. Although she had a chance to absorb the heat of the sun this morning, actually being out in the wind seemed like it stole that warmth from her. And splashing around in the cold water would make it near impossible for her chase down a squirrel. “…we might as well go after squirrels first…” She was glad to hear those words. Chasing them down would warm her up even more and maybe she would be able to catch a fish on her first try. She nodded and lifted her nose to the air sniffing for any scents that might mean a squirrel is nearby.
She looked towards Ottersplash to see what he was doing. He was…standing there? Was he just waiting for them to come to him? Because that didn’t sound like a very effective hunting strategy to her. Maybe he had asked her a question and was waiting for her to reply. No, she didn’t remember him asking her anything but she has been wrong before. Baypaw looked back towards the trees and back at him. ‘Does he want me to make the first move?’ Either way, Baypaw wasn’t just going to stand there. She was at least going to try and hunt one even if she didn’t know what she was doing. She sniffed the air for any sign of squirrels while listening for any noises. To her amazement, she caught a brief smell coming from somewhere behind them. She turned to see where the smell was coming from. There was no way she could tell which tree it came from. There was so many! Baypaw looked towards Ottersplash for help.

Finally, Ottersplash began to realize that Baypaw was a bit at a loss. When she didn't move at all, only looked at him and sniffed the air, he realized that she must not actually know how to catch squirrels. That was strange. Didn't she have a mentor?
"You ever hunted squirrels before, Baypaw?" he mewed, tilting his head to one side as he glanced over at her. "Maybe I'll go first."
Without waiting for an answer (as often was the case), Ottersplash sniffed the air and caught the same whiff of scent that Baypaw had caught. The dark warrior was not much of a hunter, but he had hunted long enough to be able to at least tell where the prey was coming from. He closed his eyes and kept breathing, moving his head from side to side. Alright, so the scent was stronger to the left. He crept forward slowly, stepping lightly so as not to disturb the squirrel's sensitive pads.
He moved slowly, though it was very hard--it was very hard for him to focus on any one thing for more than a few minutes. Finally, the squirrel came into sight, and Ottersplash moved forward even more slowly. Eventually, though, he lost interest in the careful movements, and simply darted forward. Luckily for him, the squirrel was too startled to run very fast, and he managed to pounce on it and end it's life with a bite to the throat.
Lifting the little gray creature in his mouth, Ottersplash returned to Baypaw and nodded to her. "Gotta step lightly so they don't feel you," were the only words of advice he gave her. Heck, he wasn't her mentor, and it was hard enough for him to focus on training one apprentice, much less another one.

At least Baypaw wasn’t wrong when it came to what she had smelled. When she noticed that Ottersplash had caught the same scent as she did, her self-confidence level raised a couple notches. It took her everything she had not to follow him as he got closer and closer to the squirrel. She guessed that when he slowed his steps that he had caught sight of the squirrel. She took a few steps towards him, quietly though, to get a better look at what was happening. Now, Baypaw could clearly see the grey fur of the rodent. It was a good thing that Baypaw wasn’t that focused on what Ottersplash was doing or she would of said that he was too impatient to be a warrior.
The young apprentice was stunned by how quickly the chocolate tom ended the squirrel’s life. When he got back to where she was, Baypaw looked at him eagerly. She wanted to learn how to do that so bad, she nearly jumped at him when he came back. But he wasn‘t her mentor so she expected just some tips at this point. "Gotta step lightly so they don't feel you," ‘That was it?’ She was flabbergasted! It took nearly all her will power not to be her normal self and speak her mind. “Thanks, for the advice,” she said dully. He could of at least told her how to at least tell her how to find the prey once she has caught wind of them. “So how exactly did you tell where the squirrel was?” she asked him. If he wasn’t going to straight out tell her, she might as well try and coax the information out of him.

((Speaking of which, when you read this go [here] to get Baypaw a mentor))
He wasn't much of a thoughtful cat, so he didn't even think about giving Baypaw more advice than what he did. Heck, he hadn't really taught Ashpaw to hunt squirrels yet, and it had been several moons since his own first squirrel lesson. But whatever, he'd do his best. He wanted to catch some squirrels soon so they could just go chase them around later!
It was good that Baypaw had actually asked the question, or else he wouldn't have even thought of telling her. Maybe another warrior would have been annoyed that he was giving a lesson to an apprentice that was not his, but Ottersplash wasn't. He had been bored at camp, so why not be doing this?
"Sometimes it's obvious. Sometimes the wind blows the scent directly to you, and you just go in the direction the wind is coming from." Those times were rare, though, and not relevant here. There was no wind now, which he supposed was a very good thing--the last thing they needed was an icy breeze to give them whitecough. Moonwing wouldn't be happy with them if that happened.
Bah, his mind was wandering. Ottersplash shook his head and attempted to focus on the matter at hand. His paws were itching to chase those squirrels, though! All in good time, he thought, frustrated with himself. "But if the wind isn't being so nice, then you really need to move around a bit. See where the scent is stronger. I moved my head from left to right, realized the scent was stronger to my left, and moved that way until I saw it." He hadn't spoken so many focused words in a long time, he realized. Hopefully Baypaw could get something out of these tips.

She cocked her head and tilted her ears towards him as she focused on what he was saying. “…Sometimes the wind blows the scent directly to you, and you just go in the direction the wind is coming from.” Baypaw contemplated this for a few seconds before another question popped into her head. “But what if the wind shifts and sends your scent to towards whatever you’re hunting?” So many questions was running through her head. It made it hard for her to concentrate on what the warrior was saying.
“…realized the scent was stronger to my left, and moved that way until I saw it.” She flicked her eyes back to the dead squirrel. “But..” she paused and tried to gather her thoughts. It was hard enough to try to think of questions that were actually answerable, but trying to think of questions while so many is buzzing through your head is much harder. Baypaw closed her eyes and sorted out her thoughts before opening her mouth to speak. “But what if…the scent leads you to the squirrel, or any prey for that matter, and the prey happens to be facing your direction? Would that mean you would have to give up on hunting it or wait until it turns around?”
She hoped she hadn’t bothered him too much with her questions, but he should of seen it coming when he asked her to go hunting with him. It’s not like she was planning on drowning him with them but it still made her feel a bit bad. He wasn’t her mentor after all, but then again he did come to her. Baypaw shook her head slightly and aimed her focus towards Ottersplash. It was a bad habit of hers to zone out when she was deep in thought and to miss the answers to her questions would make it seem like she didn’t really care about learning to hunt squirrels.

When he was an apprentice, Ottersplash had thought for all of two seconds about every rule and piece of advice before plunging headfirst into another attempt. In retrospect, that was probably why his mentor was so frustrated all the time, and why he wasn't all that great of a hunter today. Even so, he didn't quite understand why Baypaw was thinking so hard. But far be it from Ottersplash to try and critique or correct anyone. Let every cat think as hard or as little as they want, he figured.
"Eh, if the wind blows your scent towards the prey, it's pretty much over. You can creep forward a bit just in case, to see if the squirrel or whatever noticed, but it's likely they'll be gone. If they're not, you can just, like, move yourself around so that the wind is no longer blowing your scent towards them." That was right, wasn't it? Yeah, sure. It made sense.
“But what if…the scent leads you to the squirrel, or any prey for that matter, and the prey happens to be facing your direction? Would that mean you would have to give up on hunting it or wait until it turns around?”
Er...not such an easy question, that one. Ottersplash sat down, curled his long chocolate tail around his forepaws, and thought for a moment. Actually thought. It was hard, as his mind kept trying to wander off to the rustlings of the forest around him, but after several long moments of deliberation, he managed to form a response. Sort of.
"If the Clan is not desperate for prey and you have time to kill, then keep still and wait for it to turn around. Even though, if it's seen you, it probably won't. But if the Clan needs prey, give up on that one, because it will take too long to hunt that one little squirrel or whatever." Not that Ottersplash ever followed that advice. He never, ever kept going after prey if it was too inconvenient. He hadn't the patience, so why try to get it if he knew he'd crack anyway? Nah, he only went after prey that didn't involve long moments of sitting completely still.

“Is there any way you could tell if the wind could possibly shift? And would covering yourself in mud from the riverbank help hide your scent at all? Or would that just be too much of a hassle? Has any cat tried to attack one from a tree? Like jumping down on it?” Baypaw had to pause to catch her breath. She nearly got carried away and let loose the flood of questions that had filled her head. Her eyes flittered between Ottersplash and the squirrel.
When the tom sat and didn’t make any noise that would appear to be an answer to her many questions, Baypaw forgot about the other questions that was zooming through her mind. Had her other question, the one about what to do if the prey happened to be facing you, had it stumped him? She too sat and curled her bushy tail around her paws. It seemed like an eternity before he spoke. "If the Clan is not desperate for prey and you have time to kill, then keep still and wait for it to turn around….if the Clan needs prey, give up on that one”
She nodded and took in the new information. It did make sense to her though she couldn’t help to wonder how many cats would actually follow that advice. “But wouldn’t waiting just take up time that you could be using to catch other prey? I’m sure not many cats would want to waste time on one little squirrel when they could catch plenty more within the time they took waiting.” ‘Did that make any sense at all?’ She wasn’t sure but she didn’t care. Either way, she had more questions to ask him. “And say you did decide to wait for the chance to kill it. That would make you vulnerable to an attack from an enemy because you would be more focused on what was in front of you rather than behind you, right?”
